The international colored stone market has become increasingly complex. Demand now extends far beyond the traditional “Big Three”—ruby, sapphire, and emerald—creating new challenges for valuation professionals.

This interactive, PowerPoint-guided workshop examines the market factors that influence colored stone pricing beyond grading alone. Through examples, we will explore when these factors matter, when they do not, and how they affect value conclusions. Topics include the market differences between oil and resin enhanced emeralds, the distinction between color change and color shift, and whether that distinction has meaningful valuation implications.

The workshop will also examine value determinants that cannot be measured by the traditional grading approach. How should scarcity influence an appraiser’s level of confidence? Can one or two comparable stones establish market value, or do they simply represent a limited view of the marketplace? When market evidence is sparse, should those limitations be documented in the valuer’s workfile or disclosed in the appraisal report?
