Color grading is presented following the new World of Color nomenclature and based on the international standard of the Munsell system. In this course, participants will examine and grade a variety of colored stones. The hands-on session is supported by a PowerPoint presentation featuring high quality images of specific quality factors that establish the overall grade.
The value of a colored stone is dependent on a number of factors both internal and external to the gem. As quality factors are discussed in this course, it will be done from the perspective of the identification and classification of specific traits as they relate to value. In 1982, Gemworld International developed a system for grading colored stones within the context of trade relevant terminology (i.e. Commercial, Good, Fine and Extra Fine). Today its 1 to 10 scale is an industry standard.
